Go Green - Baking Soda Tips

There is a good chance that you are already aware of the fact that baking soda can soak up odors in your kitchen or to help dough rise, but the truth of the matter is that baking soda can help you do so much more!  If you have ever wondered what else baking soda can do for you, keep some of these important tips in mind.

1.Carpet cleaner
If you spill something liquid on your carpet, dump some baking soda on the stain and let it soak up the liquid.  You’ll find that this can take care of the stain with no further effort.

2.Car battery cleaner
Throw some baking soda onto your car battery terminals and then rinse it off with warm warm water and a toothbrush.  This will remove any acid and help maintain a good contact.

3.Putting out fires
While you should always practice good fire safety in your kitchen, a box of baking soda can be used to smother fires.  Remember that water is not always the best thing to use and that baking soda can help in  pinch.

4.Washing clothes
You’ll find that throwing a little bit of baking soda in with your clothes can not only help them get brighter and whiter, but that it can also help you remove persistent smells and scents.

5.Clean your vegetables
If you are worried about pesticides or dirt, get your veggies wet and then sprinkle them with baking soda.  After you have wet your hands, wash the vegetables.  The baking soda acts as an excellent abrasive that will not harm the fruit but that will still remove waxes and pesticides.

6.Paint cleaner
When you are trying to get ink, pencil marks, crayon markings or even furniture scruffs off of your painted walls in a way that won’t harm the paint job, put some baking powder onto a wet sponge, rub the area clean and dry it.

7.Keep your drains clear
Every week, you can pour a cup of baking soda and a cup of white vinegar down the drain.  This can help you keep the passage clear of clogs completely.

8.Glass cleaner
Get a damp sponge and sprinkle a little bit of baking soda on it.  Wipe the shower door with the sponge and then rinse with warm water; you won’t have to bother with corrosive sprays any more.

9.Hand washing
After cooking or cleaning, are your hands left smelling strange?  Just get your hands wet and then scrub them with a half a handful of baking soda.  This will get your hands clear of the scent completely.

10.Book cleaning
If you buy books second hand or you are pulling books from storage, you might notice a mildewy, unpleasant smell coming from the book.  You will find that this can be banished simply by putting the books in a plastic bag with a few grains of baking soda.  In a few days, you’ll find that the smells are gone.

11.Shampoo
If you are looking for a chemical free shampoo, baking soda will help. Water can take out most of the dirt from your hair but baking soda will do the rest. You can read more details on the 2 different blog posts Green Shampoo - No Shampoo and Natural Green Shampoo - Baking Soda

12.Stain Remover
If there are stains from foods on your counter, mix baking soda with a little bit of water to make a paste and let it sit on the stain for about an hour or so.  Just wipe off the dried powder and you’ll find that this works in removing the stain.  This also worked on a marble table.
