If you are a reader and are interested in helping the environment, you may be a little bit dismayed at how much the mass production of books can consume in the terms of natural resources. The truth is, if you are environmentally conscious reader, you will find that you can still read your favorite books while being kind to the earth. Take a look at some great tips for eco-friendly reading.
The first and best way to go without hurting the environment is to take a look at books online. There are plenty of e-publishers that publish their books online in a downloadable format. If you are someone who goes through books quickly, does not mind reading from a screen and likes their books wherever they can keep their laptop, this might be the option for you. Some small presses are only available online, so you can try things that are simply not available at your local bookstore.
You will also find that you can do a lot simply by borrowing books. The best way to do this is of course from the local library, but do not underestimate your friend’s collections as well. Readers tend to gravitate towards each other, so take the time to make sure that you take advantage of your friend’s libraries and to let them take advantage of yours.
Book exchanges, both official and unofficial, are a great way to make your reading more eco-friendly as well, so look into those. While they are ideally done locally, you will find that there are plenty of services that arrange for online swaps using the postal service. If you live in a dorm or an apartment building, you will find that you can easily start a book exchange or communal book shelf just by asking for some space and leaving some books there.
If you want your book exchange to get more fun and stay confined to your friends, why not use it as an excuse for a party? You’ll find that simply by taking the time to get a party set up and asking people to bring books that they want to get rid of, you can have a great time. Simply state that if they bring the books that they no longer want that you will take them to the library or a donation place afterwards, but before that, they can pick over their friend’s discards. This is a fun way to get together and to get new books.
Just because you are a bookworm does not mean that you can not do good things for the environment, so take the time to make sure that you are considering what impact your actions have and learn about what you can do get some new reading!
